He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
God knows how we are wired and so I love the fact that he is patient with us but at the same time wants to challenge our thinking and beliefs.  On the water’s edge that day, Jesus did not immediately say to Peter “drop everything…be my disciple…and come follow me now!”   No, Jesus slowly allowed Peter to see more of who He was through progressive levels.

However, there comes a time in our relationship with Jesus that it needs to move beyond just church attendance, occasional prayer before a meal or game that we want to win.  That’s way to boring of a faith!  In fact with a faith like that, our activity is not much different than any other religion out there today.

Jesus wasn’t kidding when he said “I have come that you may have life and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)  Likewise, he said “I am the way, the truth and the life”.  And so if we believe that, then why don’t we LISTEN and OBEY this Life Giver more?

The problem seems to be, as I see it from my own life, I want to be the “captain of my own ship.”  We are told ever since we were young to “be our own person”, “take control of your life” and “you determine your destiny”.   Some of us attempt this and actually do pretty well at it…at least for awhile.  While others have their dreams smashed early on in life and learn quickly not to stand out too much and instead, just survive.

So what do you want?  My hope is that there is a fire in your belly to live a life of significance.  If we want to see amazing things happen like they did to Peter and his crew that day, we must be willing to DO what Jesus ask us to do even when it may not make total sense.  He wants to move in our life to “overflow our boat” not just when it is comfortable or within our own interests, but when it allows Him who made the sea and everything in it, teach us how to REALLY catch some fish!

THINK:
  • Where do I keep having struggles in my life?
  • Am I willling to obey Jesus speaking to my heart even when it may not be easy or make total sense to me or friends around me?
PRAY:  Jesus I really want my life to be significant for You.  And I know You say that you are the key to that.  If I’m honest, I don’t really know how that totally works.  But, I believe it.  I do know you speak to my heart through the Holy Spirit, the Bible and others who have a relationship with You.  So, I’m asking you today to help me let you be the Captain of my life.  In Jesus name.  Amen.
